Common Characteristics of Living Things

 Introduction

        There are many things around us. Among them, some are living things and some are non-living things. All kinds of animals and plants like goats, cows, birds, dogs, human beings, fern, mushroom, cactus, pins, etc. are living things. Similarly, stone, table, chair, house, book, etc. are non-living things. All living things have some common characteristics. They are:

a.    Living things breathe.
b.    Living things need food.
c.    Living things reproduce.
d.    Living things move.
e.    Living things grow.
f.     Living things respond.
g.    Living things become old and die.


Characteristic of living things

1. Living things move

Most of the living things move. Living things show different types of movements according to their body shape. Animals move from place to place to find and shelter. They also move to protect themselves from their enemies. Most animals have legs to move. For example, cows, goats, buffaloes, cats, rats, dogs, etc. use their legs to move. Human beings have two legs to walk. Birds have wings and legs. They use wings to fly and legs to walk. Fish use their fins and tails to move in water. Snakes use their bodies to move.
